CRUSH SCHOOL

I blog on Brain-Based Learning, Metacognition, EdTech, and Social-Emotional Learning. I am the author of the Crush School Series of Books, which help students understand how their brains process information and learn. I also wrote The Power of Three: How to Simplify Your Life to Amplify Your Personal and Professional Success, but be warned that it's meant for adults who want to thrive and are comfortable with four letter words.

Hacking Design Thinking For Education Part 3: Design Thinking In School

By Oskar Cymerman | @focus2achieve | BAM! Radio Network & Teaching Channel Blogger

Think. Design. Create. Test. Analyze. Think. Design. Iterate. Test. Solve. Improve. Solve better.

Think you're done? Think again!

The Design Thinking Process is really a cycle that looks something like this:

Take the iPhone. Apple releases a new model every year. Why? Profit of course! But, each version is better. It offers something new. Something desirable. Something that solves a past problem and improves the user experience.

So, the next time you create something, take a deep breath and realize that it can be improved. In fact, if you don't improve it, someone else will! iPhone wasn't the first smartphone on the market, but as of August 2, 2016 4:32 PM is THE SMARTPHONE on the market. It is debatable if the iPhone is the best device of its kind, but it's undeniable it is the most popular. At least in the US.

Why? Design Thinking My Friend. Design Thinking.

If that doesn't convince you to TEACH YOUR STUDENTS THE DESIGN THINKING PROCESS, I give up...

Just kidding. I WILL NEVER GIVE UP. AND NEITHER SHOULD YOU.

Today, I use a chemistry example to show you how to teach Design Thinking. You can easily apply it to geography, math, or gym. Or Jim Shoe. Just kidding. If your last name is Shoe, don't name your son Jim. Please...

Here's Part 3: Design Thinking In School. Enjoy!

Hacking Design Thinking For Education Part 2: The Design Thinking Process

Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.

Go Back and Forth. Get Reactions. Rinse and Repeat.

There are many ways of looking at the design thinking process. The main premise remains the same though: Take Action and Create Something to Solve a Problem of Some Sort.

Below, I describe the most commonly used and taught Design Thinking Process. However, it is not about what the names of the 5 spaces are. Rather, "doing" design thinking is about understanding what each space involves and that the process rarely occupies a single space. In fact, any project will have the designers focusing in one area, but working within the constraints of several spaces. For example, new ideas will occur everywhere along the way to the "permanent" solution, even in the testing stage. And, the process is cyclical - it never ends...

There are always improvements to be made.

This is the second infographic I created as part of the Design Thinking Series. It is a follow up to Hacking Design Thinking For Education Part 1: What Is Design Thinking?

Enjoy!

Inspiration. Ideation. Implementation.

There are many ways of looking at the stages of the design thinking process. Many experts believe there are 5 stages to design thinking. Some cite 4 or 6. Others 7 or more.

And guess what? They are all probably correct!

And guess what else? I bet that all of them use Inspiration, Ideation, and Implementation in some way, shape, or form for they are the bare bones basic spaces all innovations go through.

Today, I give you the first Infographic in the Hacking Design Thinking For Education Series I am creating. This is Part 1: What Is design Thinking?

Enjoy, use, and abuse it at your own will.
