What should the perfect school look like? Ideologically, I mean...

I very much wish my students trusted this...

This is what Richard Branson posted today regarding his school struggles. Can we learn from such experiences? How can we improve schools? Create a "Perfect School?"

Grades might help students get into a good college, but skills they acquire will serve them all their life. I make sure to emphasize that with my students, especially when they focus on grades too much. Many students are still conditioned to view school as a place to compete against others. Grades are one such mean.

But it does not have to be this way. Parents, educators, and other stakeholders can lead such a culture change.

I often think about what it would be like to open a blended learning school that emphasizes acquiring skills, uses no grades (rather assess student learning based on meeting benchmarks), trains its teachers to help students learn (not teach) in a collaborative not competitive way, and promotes open communication, creativity, and critical thinking. A school that fosters a student culture that recognizes failures as learning opportunities necessary for success and as a "normal," socially acceptable part of the process of achievement.
