CRUSH SCHOOL

I blog on Brain-Based Learning, Metacognition, EdTech, and Social-Emotional Learning. I am the author of the Crush School Series of Books, which help students understand how their brains process information and learn. I also wrote The Power of Three: How to Simplify Your Life to Amplify Your Personal and Professional Success, but be warned that it's meant for adults who want to thrive and are comfortable with four letter words.

Chop It! How To Successfully Complete A Big Project

By Oskar Cymerman | @focus2achieve | BAm! Radio Network EdWords Blogger

Do you assign big projects? Do you give big tests? Do your students know how to complete such big projects? And, do they know how to properly prepare for those big tests?

Whatever the answers to the above questions are, big tasks tend to evoke stress and anxiety in those who have to complete them. As the brain becomes overwhelmed with the perceived enormity of the task, it tends to find things to do that bring on more pleasurable feelings. Procrastination is the result.

You might have assigned a big project to be completed at home and some students did not do it. Or, you might sometimes notice students stuck in a rut while working on a big group project in class and they opt to do something else.

Maybe they're not lazy nor distracted. Maybe their brains are in pain.

So how do they complete the big project successfully while minimizing this brain pain?

We teach them to trick their brains into thinking the project is small.

First, they plan it out. Then they chop each piece off until done.

See for yourself.

Train The Brain To Learn: Overcoming Bad Habits

By Oskar Cymerman | @focus2achieve | BAm! Radio Network EdWords Blogger

"First We Make Our Habits, Then Our Habits Make Us" - Charles C. Noble

Habits are things you do automatically. Some are good and some are bad. They can can help or harm you. Going on autopilot while brushing teeth? Good! Allows you to perhaps plan your day. Procrastination? Bad! Adds stress to your life.

But, whether a habit is a good one or a stinking nuisance, one thing's for sure: It's All In The Brain. So to change a habit, you must change your brain. And, sure enough, doing so falls under the dreaded "easier said than done" category.

You see, your brain’s #1 job is to help you survive. Thus, it often refuses spending energy on other things. Especially things it perceives as risky.

Change can be risky. Even if the change is reasonable, your brain often sees it as risky. And, it might resist it. So, you have to make your brain do it. Over and over.

Let me show you how.

Mix It Up Y'all! What, How, and Where You Learn (and Teach) Counts

By Oskar Cymerman | @focus2achieve | BAm! Radio Network EdWords Blogger

"The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance" - Alan Watts

Brain Hacking is back and today's infographic is a good one! It explains how changing things up while learning affects the learner's brain and helps her learn more effectively. It may be counter-intuitive, because we often rely on routines when we perform certain actions.

As educators and parents, we often talk about consistency. But, for some tasks, mixing it up is just what the doctor ordered. See for yourself.

Mix It Up! The What, How, and Where of Learning

MESSAGE TO TEACHERS: We all want our students to learn on a deep level. We all want our students to retain the learning long after the concepts are assessed. We all want our students to be successful. Thus, we all need to be intentional about changing up how we deliver, facilitate, and motivate students in the classroom as well. It's not the whole puzzle, but it's a piece that fits. So Mix It Up Y'all!
