CRUSH SCHOOL

I blog on Brain-Based Learning, Metacognition, EdTech, and Social-Emotional Learning. I am the author of the Crush School Series of Books, which help students understand how their brains process information and learn. I also wrote The Power of Three: How to Simplify Your Life to Amplify Your Personal and Professional Success, but be warned that it's meant for adults who want to thrive and are comfortable with four letter words.

Brain Hacking 403: Recall - Making Learning Last

By Oskar Cymerman | @focus2achieve | BAm! Radio Network EdWords Blogger

The strategy I am presenting you with today is a game changer. It has the potential to make experts out of learners and it makes learning last.

You might already know the learning strategy I am talking about, because it's been around the block. I have not invented it. I knew it before, but it was not until I took a Coursera MOOC "Learning How To Learn" By Barbara Oakley and Terrence Sejnowski that I understood its true power.

So... Ask yourself: Do my students know it? And, do they know how to use it? And, do they use RECALL consistently when studying?

I believe most students mainly re-read information when they study. However, even if your answer to the 3 questions above was a "yes," you will find a few nice Recall Hacks in the Infographic below that can help you be a more effective instructor and your students learn more effectively. And, isn't that what this whole education shindig is all about?

Brain Hacking 402: Emotional Intelligence

Unless you're a former lobotomy victim emotions affect everything you do and are present everywhere in your life. And that's a good thing! Emotions help us understand the universe, play a key part in our decision-making, and are crucial in our relationships.

If you're an educator or a parent you observe daily the power emotions have in the lives of children: They can absolutely lift them and motivate greatness or completely overwhelm them and wreak havoc.

There is a delicate balance between our "rational" brain and our "emotional" brain: Not enough emotion and you're basically a robot, too much and you're that weird crazy person everyone talks about behind their back and is at least slightly scared of.

So what do we do to help kids use just the right amount appropriate to the situation they find themselves in? Teach them to regulate. How? We boost their EQ. EQ? Yes EQ. Just look below...

Emotional Intelligence Infographic

This infographic was inspired by Daniel Goleman's bestseller "Emotional Intelligence." It is important to note that the author discusses studies that show strong evidence of teen delinquency being caused by impulsive behavior. Many, if not all communities, include individuals who have difficulty self-regulating. EQ can help solve that problem. It should be taught at home. It MUST be taught at school.

Brain Hacking 401: Dynamic Teaching & [Breathing In] The Chemicals

By Oskar Cymerman | @focus2achieve | BAm! Radio Network EdWords Blogger

Enthusiasm is contagious, so a teacher's job is to infect students. How?

Just do the opposite of what Ben Stein's character Mr. Cantwell, the pessimistic monotone nerd of a science teacher form the Wonder Years did.

Okay. That's a bad answer. First, being a nerd is pretty cool these days. Second, while being monotone is lame, it is a pretty tall order to always be "with it" and engage 100% of students 100% of the time.

But, whether we like it or not, this is how high the bar is placed and this is how high it should be placed. ONE HUNDRED FLIPPING PERCENT.

Can we get there? I don't know, but that's what I'm going for. I have a few brain hacks to help me along. They are by no means all there is. But, they are a start and they tip you off as to how you can activate chemicals in your students' brains. it's a kind of mind control...

Relax. No one is joining your cult. Unless your cult is teaching and it's dynamic.

Dynamic Teaching - Martha S. Burns TEDx Enola Talk

Ever notice how a classroom is a reflection of the teacher and the predominant mood he is in? If the teacher is passive many students tend to be as well. But if the teacher is truly involved in his students' learning they tend to be the same way.  So do it. Be enthusiastic about anything and everything. If it's hard for you? Fake it till you make it. Be Radioactive. Awaken to the possibilities, to new ways of doing things. Harness the inexhaustible energy and unstoppable will to accomplish whatever you set out to do. Do this, because your students will do the same.
