The Most Overrated Teaching Practice

Explaining more is not always the answer. A clear explanation can open the door, but students learn more deeply when they retrieve, question, apply, and struggle through the thinking themselves.

I used to think that if students were confused, the answer was “explain it again.”

Go slower. Be clearer. Give more examples. 

Maybe draw another diagram or solve one more problem on the board.

Maybe say the same thing in a slightly different way while silently wondering why my kick-ass explanation had not already changed lives.

Let Students Do Their Own Thinking

Such confusion is real in classes like Chemistry. It’s a subject that has a way of scaring the crap out of high schoolers and making teachers explain concepts over and over because the content is so abstract.

Moles, particles, coefficients, limiting reactants, gas laws, bond energy, equilibrium. It’s all invisible, symbolic, and prone to students faking their way through until the test exposes the truth.

I remember a student struggling with stoichiometry. She could follow me when I did the problem. She nodded at the mole ratio and other conversions. She copied the dimensional analysis setup. She crossed out the units. She even said, “I think I get it now Mr. C!” Then, I erased the problem I just did “with her” and gave her a similar one to try on her own. She did not know where to start….

Nothing. Nada. Nic.

Not because I explained the steps badly or she was a bad student.

The problem was I did all of the thinking.

She watched me do it and she followed the logic. But watching and following is not doing. It is not the same as being able to recall, organize, and use the idea independently.

The Trap of Explaining More

When we explain more, it feels like teaching is happening because the teacher is working hard, the board is full, and the room is quiet.

But the real question is: What are students doing with the information?

I am not arguing against direct instruction. Students need clear explanations, models, and examples. They need our guidance.

The problem rears its ugly head when explanation becomes the whole lesson—when students spend too much time listening, copying, watching, and looking engaged while doing little brain work.

And when later we assign practice for homework, they don’t know what hit them. They thought they understood and perhaps they did, but because they did not get a chance to do it on their own shortly after seeing it they did not learn.

That’s why explaining more is often overrated.

Sometimes, students do not need another explanation.

Alternatives to Explaining More

Students need a chance to think their way through the concept or the problem and, yes, a chance to struggle through it.

They need to predict, retrieve, draw, explain, compare, argue, sort, teach, connect, and apply. They need to make and correct mistakes.

They need short active learning strategies that force them to move from “I watched the teacher it” to “I can try it, explain it, and make sense of it.”

One simple such strategy is Next Move.

Instead of the teacher continuing with another explanation, problem, or example, students identify their current level of understanding by completing this sentence: "My next move is..."

This prompts metacognition as students judge where they are in their own learning process and choose one specific action to improve their understanding. Examples:

  • ask the teacher a question (specific, about something that’s unclear etc.)

  • practice another problem (same, similar, different - student is in charge of judging and guiding their own mastery and progress)

  • practice step-by-step (cover each step and try to recreate it from memory before looking at the example)

  • add evidence (look for signs the student is on the right track, improve understanding of the method, concept etc.)

  • review vocabulary (to improve understanding, connect ideas, retrieve etc.)

  • study with a partner (to compare approaches, learn from one another etc.)

The key part of the strategy is that students must be allowed to carry out their plan during the next learning opportunity—the sooner, the better.

That small shift makes students actively process the problem or the concept instead of passively watching the teacher perform it.

Helping Students Learn More

My key point is that students learn more when they do more of the thinking.

Explaining more can sometimes help, but only if students then do something meaningful with the explanation. They need to retrieve it. Use it. Question it. Apply it. Make mistakes with it. Fix those mistakes. Connect it to something else.

That’s how deeper learning starts.

Because a great explanation can open the door, but students need to walk through it themselves.

How to Build Better Learners, Not Better Test-Takers

Memorization matters, but stronger learning happens when students explain, connect, apply, and use what they know.

“I swear they forget everything five minutes after the test.”

A veteran teacher drops into the lounge chair. Coffee in one hand. Laptop in the other. The universal body language of defeat.

“They knew it yesterday,” she continues. “I literally watched them review. They could define every term. Today? Gone. Completely, like they looked into that Men in Black memory eraser thing.”

Two teachers nod silently while in line to microwave lunches of questionable nutritional value.

“They memorize just enough to survive the quiz,” a science teacher adds, “and then immediately delete the file from memory.

Sadly, that teacher lounge conversation describes modern learning well.

A lot of what happens in schools is painfully superficial. Students memorize a bunch of definitions throughout the week, survive a quiz on Friday, and mentally throw up the information by Monday. They recognize vocabulary words, dates etc. just long enough to pick the correct answer on a multiple choice quiz. But they don’t retain.

And can we blame them? 

We’ve Built a System that Rewards Memorization

Most students quickly learn that school is less about understanding and more about grades and quick, but temporary information storage. 

Memorize. Repeat. Forget. Repeat again–the school equivalent of downloading a file and dragging it into the trash bin after use.

But memorization is not the problem. 

Cognitively-speaking, memorizing facts is extremely important. The brain needs stored information to analyze, synthesize, problem solve, think critically, create, or transfer knowledge. Memorizing information allows the brain to retrieve knowledge quickly, reduce cognitive load, recognize patterns faster, and free up working memory for more advanced thinking.

The problem is memorization without understanding, application, or connection.

Many students have been conditioned to stop at Level 1 thinking– they memorize vocabulary, formulas, dates, and definitions.

Strong Learners Go One Level Deeper

They ask: Why? How? What connects to this? What causes this? Why does this matter? What happens if this changes?

Such deeper processing is where stronger understanding forms and true learning happens. Memorized information provides building materials. Deeper processing is what turns those materials into actual brain structures. 

This is exactly why strategies like 2 Questions, 2 Levels work. They intentionally move students from simple retrieval into deeper reasoning. The first question checks whether students can recognize or recall information, while the second forces them to explain, connect, justify, predict, or analyze.

When a student answers “What is Newton’s Second Law?,” they are doing Level 1 thinking.

Following with “Why does a heavier object require more force to accelerate?,” forces Level 2 processing. Now the student must think through the relationship between force, mass, and motion rather than simply recite a definition.

The same applies to every subject.

An ELA student may memorize that “theme” is the message of a story, but asking “How do the character’s choices reveal the theme?,” forces deeper thinking.

The strategy helps students see the difference between recognizing information and actually understanding it. It teaches them metacognition–thinking about their thinking. It builds their “learning how to learn” skillset–picking study strategies and learning approaches that promote better understanding and long-term retention.

How to Use the 2 Questions, 2 Levels Classroom Strategy

  1. First, give students one basic recall question about recently learned content

  2. Then ask a second question that requires explanation, reasoning, application, or analysis about the same concept

  3. Students answer both questions individually or with a partner

  4. Encourage students to explain how or why in detail

  5. Discuss differences between the two types of thinking (metacognition)

Why Memorization Still Matters

One major reason memorization matters, however, is that working memory is very limited. The brain can only actively process a small amount of information at one time. When knowledge becomes memorized and easily retrievable, it frees up working memory for more advanced thinking. This is called automaticity.

A student who automatically recalls multiplication facts can focus on algebraic reasoning instead of mentally struggling with basic arithmetic. A fluent reader can focus on meaning and analysis rather than decoding every individual word. 

Memorization, when done correctly, reduces cognitive load and makes higher-level thinking possible.

Why Retrieval Practice Matters

Retrieval strengthens learning as well. Every time students successfully recall information, the neural pathways associated with that information become stronger and more efficient. Retrieval leads to myelination–the brain pathway along which the information flows becomes faster and smoother, making it easier to access later.

This is one reason retrieval practice is so powerful. The brain grows and strengthens what it repeatedly uses.

But retrieval alone is not enough.

How Strong Thinking Develops

Strong thinking develops when students elaborate–explain ideas, connect concepts, defend reasoning, apply knowledge, and process information deeply enough that it becomes flexible and usable rather than fragile and temporary.

Over time, students begin realizing that smart learners do not just remember information. They explain it, connect it, and reason through and with it.

Through this realization, more of them become better learners.

Level 1 thinking isn’t bad. It’s necessary. Students need basic knowledge before they can create with it. Memorization is the starting point of learning, but it should never be the end.

If we want students to become stronger thinkers and better learners, we have to regularly push them beyond simple recognition and into explanation, reasoning, application, and connection. 

That means every day implementation of classroom strategies that force deeper processing instead of rewarding temporary memorization alone. 

Strategies like 2 Questions, 2 Levels train students to move from “What is it?” to “How does it work?” and eventually to “Why does it matter?” 

That progression is where deeper learning lives.

Final Thoughts on Memory and Understanding

Strong thinking depends on both long-term and working memory.

The brain cannot analyze what it cannot retrieve.

Thus, understanding grows from memory, not instead of it, and we need to have our students practice both every day to build their brains and help them become better learners.

Teaching for Attention Spans: 3 Classroom Engagement Strategies for the Age of Distraction

Short, high-energy classroom activities like Picture It, 90-Second Teacher, and What If? help students focus, think, explain, and actively engage with learning.

Teaching has always required attention.

But teaching now is a different beast.

Students walk into class with phones, notifications, stress, sleep deprivation, social drama, sports, jobs, and a million mental tabs already open. Then we ask them to focus on cell structure, theme, linear equations, Reconstruction, or whatever wonderful lesson we spent too much time planning.

And sometimes they do.

For about eight minutes.

Then it begins. The side conversation. The blank stare. The Chromebook tab shuffle. The “Can I go to the bathroom?” escape attempt.

It’s easy to blame the current generation for having shorter attention spans, but that doesn’t really help us teach them.

So the question is: How do we design learning for the attention spans students actually have?

I don’t mean lowering expectations, but teaching smarter—using short, focused, high-energy classroom engagement strategies that pull students back into thinking before their attention takes a hike of the mental variety.

In other words, we need to plan intentional, engaging, and active learning classroom moves that work with the brain instead of against it.

Attention Is Not Automatic

I don’t know about you, but one of the biggest mistakes teaching mistakes I made in the past was assuming students are ready to learn just because class started.

They’re not. Their bodies are present, but their brains may still be in the hallway, at lunch, on their phones, or thinking about something that happened three periods ago.

That’s why the first few minutes matter so much.

A strong bell ringer, lesson hook, quick visual task, partner explanation, or discussion starter helps students shift from “I’m physically here” to “I’m actually thinking.”

That shift is everything, because attention is the gateway to learning.

No attention = no learning.

That’s why teaching for attention spans matters. We don’t need to entertain our students every second, but we do need to create moments that spark their curiosity, activate prior knowledge, and give them something meaningful to do.

Why Short Activities Work

Short activities work because they match how the brain processes information.

Long stretches of passive listening can overload working memory. Even when students are trying, too much information at once can cause the brain to shut down or wander.

Short, high-impact activities give students a chance to reset.

They can draw, teach, question, explain, move, debate, or connect ideas before returning to the lesson.

This is why many science backed teaching strategies are not complicated. They are small shifts that change what students are doing with information.

Instead of only listening, students think.

Instead of only copying, students create.

Instead of only watching, students explain.

Instead of only receiving information, students use it.

That is learning that works because it engages the mind more actively.

3 Simple Strategies for Distracted Students

Here are three high impact teaching strategies you can use when students need more than another slide, worksheet, or reminder to “pay attention.”

1. Picture It

Give students a concept, process, event, theory, or big idea. Then, ask them to create a quick visual metaphor or analogy for it.

Not a perfect drawing. Just a simple image that shows what the idea is like.

For example, students might show natural selection as a tournament bracket, theme as roots beneath a tree, or cultural diffusion as ripples spreading across water.

Then students label key parts of the drawing and explain how the metaphor represents the concept.

Picture It works because it gives students a different way into the learning. Some students struggle with abstract vocabulary, long definitions, or heavy teacher explanations. But when they have to turn an idea into a visual, they have to think about what the idea actually means.

This uses dual coding, retrieval, elaboration, and transfer without making students feel like they are doing a traditional review task.

It also makes learning visible as it helps teachers see student understanding. A missing label, weird connection, or a confusing image say you a lot.

2. 90-Second Teacher

Pair students up and give each student a different concept connected to a larger theme.

Students get 90 seconds to prepare. They can create a quick sketch, diagram, example, or visual, but they cannot simply copy a definition.

Then each partner gets 90 seconds to teach their concept using their visual and their own words.

After both partners teach, they figure out how the two concepts connect.

This is one of those active learning strategies that sounds almost too simple, but the pacing makes it powerful.

The time limit creates urgency. The drawing gives students something to explain. The teaching forces them to organize their thinking. The connection piece keeps the activity from becoming another isolated vocabulary practice.

Students are not just learning a word. They are explaining it, hearing another concept, and figuring out how ideas fit together.

That is exactly the kind of student centered learning strategy that helps distracted students stay involved, because everyone has a job and nobody can disappear for twenty minutes.

3. What If?

Give students a concept, process, event, vocabulary term, formula, or big idea.

Then have them answer four quick prompts: What is it? How does it work? Why does it matter? What if it changed?

That last question is the magic. “What if it changed?” pushes students beyond memorization. It forces them to think about consequences, systems, relationships, and real-world impact.

Examples: What if the greenhouse effect changed? What if probability could be greater than 1? What if foreshadowing disappeared from a story? What if citizens had less voice in a democracy?

Students can answer individually, with partners, or in small groups. Then they compare responses and discuss which explanations are strongest.

What If? works because it turns a concept into something students have to use.

They retrieve what they know, explain how it works, decide why it matters, and stretch the idea into a new situation.

Deeper than copying a definition, it gives students a reason to think.

Engagement Is Not Extra

“Engagement” is not about games, noise, entertainment, or otherwise keeping students amused.

It is about getting students mentally involved. Engaged students are ones that are visualizing, explaining, connecting, questioning, teaching, predicting, retrieving, and applying ideas.

That’s the heart of brain based teaching. Students doing the thinking. And when students do more of the thinking, learning becomes stronger.

This is especially important as teachers prepare for a new school year. During July, many teachers start thinking about first day activities, bell ringers, classroom management, and back-to-school routines.

But let’s not make the mistake of just planning for what students shouldn’t do.

Let’s plan for what they will do.

Let’s plan for curiosity, retrieval, intentional movement, discussion, and attention.

Final Thoughts

Teaching for attention spans does not mean giving up on deep learning, but creating better entry points into it.

Students still need content, practice, and challenge. But they also need sparks—small moments that wake up attention, activate thinking, and pull them into the hard work of learning.

Distracted students don’t need longer lectures. They need better reasons to engage and activate their thinking.

Because that’s where learning that works begins.
